Barry Silbert

Barry Silbert is a New York-based entrepreneur, investor, and founder. He is a former CEO and Chairman of SecondMarket. He is best known as the founder and CEO of Digital Currency Group (DCG), which is the parent company of Genesis, a troubled crypto firm. He is also the founder of Grayscale Investments and Bitcoin Investment Trust (BIT)

Barry Silbert graduated from Emory University's Goizueta Business School with a degree in finance Silbert founded SecondMarket in 2008 and served as CEO until 2014 and Chairman until 2015 when it was acquired by Nasdaq, Inc. In 2015, he founded DCG, which actively invests in seed-stage companies in the digital currency, blockchain technology, and global financial services sectors. Some of DCG's notable investments include BitGo, BitPay, Coinbase, Ripple Labs, and Xapo.

In 2013, Silbert founded BIT, a private, open-ended trust sponsored by Grayscale Investments, which solely invests in and derives value from the price of bitcoin, with publicly quoted securities (ticker: GBTC).

Silbert has invested in several companies, including Artsy, Coinsetter, Lenddo, and Ripio, and has had notable exits, including Voyat, TradeBlock, and SponsorHub. In 2011, he was named "Entrepreneur of the Year" by Ernst & Young and Crain's and was listed on Fortune's "40 Under 40" list.

Most recently Gemini CEO Cameron Winklevoss has accused Digital Currency Group (DCG) CEO Barry Silbert of defrauding 340,000 crypto investors through the Gemini Earn product, a partnership between Gemini and DCG's lending firm Genesis Global Trading. Winklevoss alleges that Silbert and his companies "conspired to make false statements and misrepresentations about the solvency and financial health of Genesis" to buy time to remedy the collapse of FTX. In response, a DCG spokesperson called the accusations a "desperate and unconstructive publicity stunt." Silbert and DCG are also under investigation by the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York and the SEC.
