Launched in March 2015, NEM stood out as a trailblazer within the blockchain realm. Its mission was to enhance the blockchain technology of the era by addressing the drawbacks observed in existing systems. It distinguished itself as one of the early blockchains to introduce innovations such as user-generated tokens (referred to as mosaics), namespaces, accounts with multisignature capabilities, and a peer-to-peer reputation mechanism powered by EigenTrust++. Among its groundbreaking features was the PoI (Proof of Importance) consensus protocol, designed to incentivize active participation on the network while preventing the wealth centralization often seen in proof-of-stake systems. The NEM client, known as NIS, is developed in Java. As of today, NEM continues to be a vibrant and frequently traded digital currency. The current focus of its development is on the integration with Symbol, another blockchain project, indicating a forward-moving direction for the platform.
